This is the story of an amazing young man who literally reinvented, reinvigorated, and renewed himself; finding a new verve for life in the wonderful world of bondage & discipline, domination & submission, sadism & masochism, most often referred to by its compound initialism BDSM. Tory Pup, his new name, found refuge in the Sanctuary of a Dark Angel, and a mentor in Doug Harris, affectionately known as Papa, and soon after found true love when he met his Sir Ray. Together Tory Pup, Sir Ray, and pup’s “brother from another mother,” Jody, would see a dream come true: owning and operating their own leather business, catering primarily to the the very people who had become pup’s new family when he so desperately needed it, the BDSM and Fetish lifestyle community.
Pup met Sir not long after he found his way to the Sanctuary of a Dark Angel, which was a dungeon play room in Atlanta, Georgia. Pup had recently survived the end of a very tumultuous relationship with a very gifted yet troubled man. Pup had always been fascinated with the leather community, and was a member of a short lived local leather club a few years prior. As fate would have it, long about this time Pup was laid off from his job. This would prove to be a blessing in disguise, as this job was a dead end job, with no opportunity for advancement.
With no immediate prospects for employment on the horizon, Pup began picking up shifts helping out at the leather shop just down from the Sanctuary. An interesting little shop by the name of Foreskins. Pup, it would seem, had found his calling in life: a job that would tap into his creative side and allow him to use his inherent skills of craftsmanship. Remembering the lessons from so long ago, taught by his dear departed grandmother, a true artist, artisan, and craftsman, the master of many mediums, though I don’t think she ever put those talents to use on anything made of cow hide.
It’s true that God works in mysterious ways, but it ain’t no mystery to me that what goes around comes around, and fate, the universe AND God eventually see to it that those who do good in the world, receive good from the world, just maybe not always in the time and/or manner in which we expect, or want it. My point: in my opinion, they just don’t come much better than Tory Pup, and as his journey continued, a young lady in the BDSM community took notice of his workmanship. Her name is Charlie Girl, and so impressed was she, that she recommended him to her mother, a prominent figure in the community, as well as owner and operator of a well established leather business by the name of Achella. Pup was soon employed full time by Beverly, aka Ms. Velvet, where he worked with a highly skilled crew of family and friends, honing his skills, all the while picking up pointers and tips from by far, one of the most business savvy individuals in the business. I must admit, I wonder if he might still be employed there, had we all not suffered the tragic and sudden loss of Ms. Velvet as she passed from this life in 2007. Beverly left the business to her husband and daughter, Hans and Charlie Girl, but they soon came to the decision to sell it. Pup was part of the business deal, which translated to continued employment, but he had new bosses, some new coworkers, and a new way of doing business. So, a lot of changes, and change can be difficult, but Pup is resilient, and as flexible as he needs to be in most situations, so he continued to work there for about 4 more years, always doing his best work and going the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction, for these are his work ethics. But he yearned to have his own leather business where he could take what he had learned over the years, and especially working with Beverly, and apply that very successful business model to his line of custom leather apparel & accessories, restraints, harnesses, gags and such, as well as an array of impact toys fashioned from leather, wood, plastic, etc. and offer them at a reasonable price.
Fair trade for rough trade.
Sir Ray believed in his Tory pup and together they began to take steps to bring this shared dream to fruition. They researched the possibility of opening a brick and mortar store, but the real estate market made this proposition expensive as well as risky. A website was definitely in order, and with the help of some software Sir purchased Jody was able to build one. Sir also took care of all the fees and charges involved in securing the proper business documentation, so as to keep us straight with the government, of course. www.barkingleather.com debuted in April of 2011, although not necessarily to much fanfare. We here at Barking Leather are in hopes that this here little old blog your reading might generate some traffic there. That’s
The next logical step in Barking Leather’s business model was trade shows, but it seemed a push was needed to get us going in that direction, and that push came later in the summer of 2011 when Pup was laid off, but before we could start doing trade shows we needed some way to get there. Once again, Sir Ray to the rescue, as always. He purchased a conversion van for Barking Leather and told Pup to start booking some shows starting for the following year. He also asked Pup to come up with an order list of the materials necessary to have sufficient inventory for a trade show booth display.
The goal was to schedule 10 to 12 shows for 2012.
We did Mid Atlantic Leather in January in Washington DC.
